At Up-Lock Academy, we believe in utilizing a holistic approach in treating the entire face (nose, jaws, teeth, tongue) not just the teeth. Our revolutionary appliances and pacifiers teach and sustain correct oral posture, fostering optimal health and nasal breathing. Our innovative technology, inspired by the work in Jaws - the story of a hidden epidemic, allows us to train and gather bio-metric data directly from users' homes, enabling us to monitor nasal function and overall health.
Crooked teeth are a sign of poor development of the jaws. Today 7 out of ten children have crooked teeth. Before the industrial revolution, this number was as low as 1 out of twenty.
“The human jaw has been shrinking for hundreds of years. That’s the cause of many of the problems kids go to see orthodontists about, that’s the cause of sleep apnea and so on. It’s a brand new thing since industrialization. The famous human paleontologist Richard Klein has stated that he has never seen a hunter-gather skull with a shrunken jaw or crooked teeth.”
Modern, industrialized societies are plagued by small jaws and crowded, ill-aligned teeth or malocclusion. Simply put, a bad bite. This has become a hidden epidemic that has gone virtually unrecognized.
Everyone thinks they know how to close their mouth when in fact, they are only closing their lips. Lips would be like a house’s front door, and the tongue and soft palate are the back door. So, why doesn’t anyone think about closing the back door? Because we can’t see it, we just feel it.
The back door is important because, when left open, it causes drafts in the airway, uncontrolled airflow, snoring, sleep apnea, and many other side effects, such as undesirable alterations in facial growth and tooth position.
The Up-lock maneuver generates negative pressure to completely close the mouth’s “doors” in front of and behind, thus widening the airway. It is performed to create sufficient tension in the space between the tongue and the hard palate.
It can be performed in various ways, with and without assistance. Normal swallowing ends in the Up-lock position, so anyone who can swallow normally will be able to recognize the position easily.
We created the Up Locker device to allow users to quickly learn how to assume the Up-lock position. With these tools and exercises, we establish natural patterns that can be learned and automated, ultimately resulting in enduring enhancements in breathing recovery.
